Interview with Anjali Motwani
Q1. Your journey beautifully blends corporate leadership, writing, and personal transformation. How would you describe the woman you are today?
I would describe myself as a woman constantly evolving. Life has taught me that growth is not about becoming someone else — it’s about returning to yourself layer by layer. Every role I’ve played, whether in leadership, writing, or public life, has shaped me differently. Today, I value authenticity more than perfection. I believe strength can exist alongside softness, and success means very little if you lose yourself while achieving it.
Q2. Growing up in Goa and later stepping into global leadership spaces must have been a transformative journey. How did your early experiences shape your perspective?
Growing up in Goa gave me simplicity, emotional depth, and an appreciation for stillness. It taught me how to observe life beyond competition. Later, entering global corporate spaces exposed me to diverse people, cultures, and ways of thinking. The contrast between the two worlds became my greatest teacher. It helped me understand that identity is fluid and that true leadership comes from empathy, awareness, and emotional intelligence rather than authority alone.
Q3. Your book Awakening Within: The Unlearning Journey has deeply resonated with readers. What inspired you to write it?
The book was born from personal introspection. I realized that many of us spend years living according to inherited beliefs, societal conditioning, and silent fears without questioning whether those truths actually belong to us. I wanted to create something honest — a conversation that encourages people to reflect on their inner world. Awakening Within is not about teaching people who to become; it is about helping them remember who they already are beneath the noise.
Q4. You often speak about “unlearning.” Why is unlearning so important in personal growth?
Because sometimes what holds us back is not lack of knowledge — it is outdated beliefs. We are conditioned from childhood to seek approval, suppress emotions, and define our worth through external success. Unlearning allows us to question these patterns. It creates space for freedom, clarity, and emotional healing. Real transformation begins when we stop living automatically and start living consciously.
Q5. As an HR leader in a global investment bank, what lessons about people and leadership have impacted you the most?
Working with people from different backgrounds has shown me that every individual carries invisible stories, fears, ambitions, and emotional struggles. Leadership is not just about performance; it’s about understanding human behavior with compassion. The best leaders are not those who dominate a room, but those who make people feel seen, heard, and valued. I believe emotional intelligence is one of the most underrated strengths in the corporate world today.
Q6. Many women today struggle with balancing ambition, identity, and emotional well-being. What advice would you give them?
Don’t abandon yourself while trying to prove yourself. Women are often expected to constantly perform — professionally, emotionally, socially, and personally. But balance begins with self-awareness. Learn to pause. Learn to say no without guilt. Learn to celebrate your individuality without comparing your journey to others. Success becomes meaningful only when your inner peace remains intact.
Q7. Your presence reflects elegance, confidence, and substance. How do you personally define beauty?
For me, beauty is authenticity. It is the ability to be fully yourself without constantly seeking validation. True beauty comes from emotional depth, kindness, awareness, and confidence rooted in self-acceptance. A graceful presence is not created by appearance alone — it is created by how comfortably a person lives within their truth.
Q8. What message would you like readers of Womaniean Magazine to take away from your story?
I want people to understand that they don’t have to become someone new to feel worthy. Sometimes healing begins when we stop running and start listening to ourselves honestly. Your truth may feel unfamiliar at first because the world conditions you to fit in. But the moment you choose authenticity over approval, your real journey begins.
